Broke out

I prefer to use break out, or broke out in this context.

disagree sampharo : Not really. Demonstrations erupt in protest, but break out is when they leave the organized state. Consider "Break out of formation", also "The demonstration erupted in Times Square, and later broke out to cover all of New York."
