supercede doesn't not exist!!!
Peer comment(s):

neutral John Bowden : Your "doesn't not exist" comment is inadvertently correct! See http://www.investorwords.com/cgi-bin/letter.cgi?S

agree Refugio : Based on its etymology, supersede is correct. As for the Investorwords, even glossaries can make mistakes. Supersede is a favorite of spelling bees because it is so often misspelled.

yes

however, superSede is more commonly used. The Webster lists supercede as another variant of supersede.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Scott Horne (X) : _supersede_ is standard

no doubt it is. but is the word supeCede also correct? The Merriam-Webster says it's the variant of the standard superSede.
agree John Bowden : Yes, supersede is standard, but things may be changing, in teh US at least: this link only gives supercede! http://www.investorwords.com/cgi-bin/letter.cgi?S

you're right, John.
agree Сергей Лузан : with "supersede" that is more commonly used.

supercede or supersede

apparently either or is correct. Here is an explanation from Kenneth G. Wilson (1923–). The Columbia Guide to Standard American English. 1993.

supersede, supercede,

We got the word supersede/supercede from the Latin supersedere, by way of the Old French superceder (later superseder), so etymology offers arguments in favor of each spelling. Supersede is the overwhelming preference of Edited English, although supercede does occur in print. If one regulation replaces another, the new one supersedes the old one
Peer comment(s):

neutral Scott Horne (X) : _supersede_ is standard
