English term

vanity project

English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
Here's a possible context: a young man would say about his parents: : I guess I was their vanity project".

However, this expression is largely used in other contexts too. It doesn't seem "subtle" enough to be called an idiom. It seems to be just a fancy-talk expression, used mostly by critics. Still what do they imply? I have some vague idea, but I won't reveal it not to mislead you.

Explanations and short examples would be appreciated.

Discussion

RHELLER Apr 29, 2006:
I think vanity project goes a little farther than "pet project"; it implies a big ego and "extra" cash.
Nick Lingris Apr 29, 2006:
Tell the evaluator that the Tower of Babel was the first "vanity project" and he/she should understand. Then ask him/her to read Shelley's Ozymandias.
Sorin Roman (asker) Apr 29, 2006:
P.S. Competence level A language competence evaluator suggested the correct translation into Romanian was "proiect preferat". Back into English, that would be "a preferred/favourite project", which, in my opinion, is quite inappropriate. How would you assess the evaluator's compentence level? ;-)

His parents either had him in the first place, or had him educated in a certain way and/or arranged for him to have a prosperous career, not because they really cared about him but just in order to satisfy their own vanity, to try to justify and display their own (probably unjustified) high opinion of themselves.

act of ostentation

a showy act intended to impress people.
For example, vanity press means "a printing house that specializes in publishing books for which the authors pay all or most of the costs."

agree Suzan Hamer : Yes, vanity press was my first thought too, Pnina. I'm not sure if it's ostentation, vanity, or just, regarding vanity presses, an inability to get published by anyone else
