Same term used in French. Etymologically speaking, it is from "independent labels".
The French site www.chez.com/syberpop is good for an explanation of how the genre came about. In particular its article on the Reading (pronounced Redding) Music Festival. Origianlly in the 60's this festival concentrated on jazz & blues. It moved on through R&B (rock and blues)to hard rock in the 70's and punk - new wave in the 80's. At the end of the 80's lots of independent labels sprouted from the punk era. Some of the more successful ones got swallowed up by the major labels or offshoots thereof. Ex Sugarcubes, Nivarna, New Order.
Essentially summed up (by my brother, who has had his own independent label in London for 25 years or so) as white "studenty" independent rock.
Some webrefs in addition to French site above :
www.indiering.com
www.indie-music.com
www.musicnote.com
www.fantasticplastic.co.uk (lots of labels)
www.indiemusicaccess.com
Hope this helps you out.

etre à la pointe de X & star mélangant deux types de musique
cutting edge = literally "le tranchant" but here, probably in the sense of leading edge (often used to describe new technological advances). Here the expression : "etre à la pointe de" should work
crossover star = literally "croisement" but specifically applied to the music world, it means "un mélange de genres". A jazz-rap cross over = "un mélange de jazz et de rap". A star who crosses over is no doubt one who marries two or more music styles in one. Either that or one who was originally known in one particular filed (classic) for example and who has crossed over into another, rock for example.
