A cathode ray tube (CRT) used as a TV/computer screen uses a shadow mask to produce the colour picture by letting through red, green and blue light rays separately, but the shadow mask is not necessarily flat. Due to difficulties with bending the light rays coming from more or less a single point behind the shadow mask, the first CRTs were far from flat. Some more advanced CRTs have a completely flat shadow mask.
