Discussion

Johanna Timm, PhD Mar 19, 2005:
In view of your added info I'd think the meaning of this phrase is more in the lines of "Papier ist geduldig"
Non-ProZ.com Mar 18, 2005:
It's not a headline, it's a part of the concluding paragraph.
Michael Schubert Mar 18, 2005:
Yes, it helps ... we were all on the wrong track! :-) I don't see how that headline fits the context you describe; if I were you, I'd just create another slogan from a blank slate! If I can think of one, I'll suggest it ...
Non-ProZ.com Mar 17, 2005:
Context: company accounts It's an article about how company accounts can be made to tell any number of stories. For example, you can minimise profit and thus tax burden, or you can capitalise assets, thus gaining equity and improving your basis for future loans. Does that help?
Michael Schubert Mar 17, 2005:
Please give us more information about the context in which this appears, also whether it's formal or casual. That will make it much easier to choose the best response.
Aniello Scognamiglio (X) Mar 17, 2005:
Can you give us some context? I know at least 2 possible solutions. It may refer to appearance, it may refer to behaviour (my suggestion)...

agree Michael Schubert : I definitely like "You never get a second chance to make a first impression"! I just can't tell whether it fits the desired tone and context, as none was provided.

agree Frosty : Nice one

agree Francis Lee (X) : I would have quoted Kinky Friedman's "You never get a second chance to make a first impression" anyway!

agree Aniello Scognamiglio (X) : this is very likely: "You never get a second chance to make a first impression"

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Based on context, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression" fits best. Thank you!"

Clothes maketh the man

New to me too, but the sites I've found seem to refer to appearance

Or (after reading hirselina) \"first impressions count\", \"first impressions matter\"

I have done some research.
It is very likely that the saying refers to the way people cloth and behave. In such case I would prefer \"You never get a second chance to make a first impression\".

neutral Michael Schubert : If this is the intended meaning, and depending on the tone of the text: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." (That's how I usually hear the "Golden Rule" cited.)

following your clarification of context, how about: you reap what you sow! I think this is more appropriate in this case.
