German term

Besucherbergwerk

German to English Marketing Tourism & Travel
The context is the "Besucherbergwerk F60" in the Lausitz, a revamped mine turned tourist attraction. I definitely need some sort of English name for it (because it appears literally 100 times, and readers will forget if you leave the German and only explain it the first time). "Visitors' mine" just doesn't sound right. I checked e.g. Cornish equivalents, but none of them referred to a particular term.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Mar 6, 2005:
"public mine" ?
Non-ProZ.com Mar 5, 2005:
I'd use heritage, except that's part of the general context. All of these mines-turned-lakes (its part of a 10-year project (IBA) to "reclaim the landscape(s)", as it were, of the Lausitz) are heritage sites anyway.
Non-ProZ.com Mar 5, 2005:
I see JeffZ is familiar with the F60 incl. conveyor bridge. Its not really a museum or exhibition. Perhaps the "F60 mining site". On a further note, the English iba-see site is useless (which directly explains my working the weekend). At some places I will just write F60, but I do need a snappy term elsewhere.
writeaway Mar 5, 2005:
what's involved-is it just a tour of an old mining site or has it been converted into a recreational site, etc.?

F60

Why don't you explain it once with the first mention, and then just call it F60 afterwards? Their Web site is, after all, www.f60.de (where they call it "visitor attraction", which is fairly silly)

In the instances where you need to describe it, you could say \"xxx strip mine\", liberally substituting adjectives like \"former\", \"retired\", \"inactive\", \"impressive\", etc.

And yes, the Lausitz is in Berlin\'s bacon belt :-)

You could also refer to it as \"this attraction\", \"this monumental feat of mechanical engineering\", etc.

agree Claire Cox : I've checked the website for the Blaenau slate mining museum up in North Wales, where thye have just such a mine but they just refer to it as a mine and explain that it's open to the public and recreates life in the mines, etc, etc.

agree rangepost : with using adjectives. In MN some of the old mines are open as state parks, and they just use "mine"

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I put "mining heritage site", although within the specific context referred alternately to the (F60) mine or conveyor bridge. Thanks for the effort!"

Exhibition mine

This may be an alternative to "Visitors' Mine".
Peer comment(s):

neutral JeffFish (X) : not bad, but raises an image (deep underground mine) that the attraction itself doesn't deliver: it's a tour of the (above)grounds and, especially, the giant conveyor bridge

agree Reiner Dieg (X) : Look up "exhibition mine" in Google and you'll see references to one in VA and one in WV, USA. They refer to themselves as "exhibition coal mines."

Mining Museum

from the website it seems to be a mining museum where there are guided tours, but wich also has occasional concerts, art displays etc. Similar sites in Yorkshire are called "Mining Museums", but maybe a term like "Mining Centre and Exhibition Centre" might work too.

agree Steffen Walter : Perhaps add "opencast" somewhere at the beginning of the text to make clear that this is not located underground.
