English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering

"WM geometry for machining steel and cast iron with hardness < 200 HB in stable conditions, increase feed (fn) with 50%."

...does it mean increase feed speed BY 50%?

... ooops sorry, now I see them again, sorry to disturb you
Non-ProZ.com Feb 27, 2005:
cannot see Dusty's answer any more... what happened?
Tony M Feb 19, 2005:
In fact, it is probably 'telegraphese' for:

"(these wonderful new tools) allow feed rates to be increased by 50%"

In other words, I doubt it is actually an INSTRUCTION to increase... :-)
Tony M Feb 19, 2005:
In that case, you're probably safe to assume that it DOES indeed mean 'increase feed (rate) by 50%'
Non-ProZ.com Feb 19, 2005:
thanks Dusty, the English is of Swedish origins, so to say...
Tony M Feb 19, 2005:
'Feed' here probably does mean 'feed rate', i.e. basically speed --- though that abbreviation 'fn' could give rise to some doubt: might it be 'nominal FORCE' [i.e. feed pressure?] --- but could be 'nominal feed (rate)'? Speed is more usual, I think.
Tony M Feb 19, 2005:
Elena, it is NOT clear that they mean 'by' when they say 'with' here, though this does seem to be the only logical assumption; but the English is very odd, is the quality of the text reliable; or could there perhaps be text missing after 'with...'?

Don't grade this answer. Dusty has actually answered this in his note above, he should post his note as an answer, even if it was a simple yes or no.

Anyway, this may have been translated from another language in which the word for "with" is used as "by" is used in English.

Increase feed would be "pushing the material through to be processed/worked with", so to speak. If you are drilling metal, then the feed would be how hard you push the drill end down on the metal. With less feed there is less pressure on the end and vice versa.
