Il exécute en 1965, le plafond de l’Odéon à Paris sur le thème de la Tragédie. This sentence is from a biography of the artist Masson. What is "la Tragedie?" Does it have an English title (like The Tragedy), or should I leave it as is?

It looks like the Odéon's ceiling, painted by André Masson, has figures inspired by various tragedians- Aeschylus, Aristophanies, and Shakespeare.

I think "tragedie" here is used to generally refer to the world of theater, drama, and tragedy- as perhaps you might encounter "Art" capitalized, as in: "His book was about Art." Not a choice I would make, but not all that unusual.

here is a link to Masson\'s work, \"Tragédie,\" which is in the Galerie Patrice Trigano. It\'s a cubist work, so it\'s not entirely clear what exactly is being represented... though it does look to me like a play is being performed.

Comment: "Judging by the very good reference you provided, I agree that this is meant as a generic term encompassing tragedy in general in the sense of plays or drama. Thanks."
