I had translated that as "los estadounidenses comunes y corrientes" but my proofreader changed it to "el estadounidense medio"--which do you think is better? (or is there an even better alternative)?

O "la tipa" si quieres. "Average" en este sentido no viene de un término de estadísticas (i.e. mean, standard deviation, etc.).
