German term

im engsten Familienkreis

Non-PRO German to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters wedding
I'm quite sure there is an English expression for "im engsten Familienkreis" ...

--> "Sie heiratete in Wien im engsten Familienkreis."

Thanks a million!

An important point: is this person a VIP of some sort?

agree Erik Macki : Most of the suggestions are fine, but I like this one best just because I think it's the most common way people express the idea of a small family-only wedding in English.

in the presence of her closest relatives

She married in Wien, in the presence of her closest relatives.

She and Sen. Kerry were married **in the presence of** her three sons and his two daughters on Memorial Day weekend in 1995.

only immediate family were present...

You have to rephrase a bit in English - only immediate family members were present at (invited to) the wedding.

Depending on context and/or register, you might also say that the event was limited to immediate family only.

And Collins says:
Familienkreis family circle;
die Trauung fand im engsten Familienkreis statt only the immediate family were present at the wedding

in a small family wedding

This is the more literal translation, as confirmed by the references below. However, I kind of like Norbert's suggestion better, even though it doesn't specifically mention "family".
