I need to get a better dictionary! I only find "places" and "wave/swell" as definitions for this word. My context seems to imply that the meaning is "means" but I don't find dictionary support for this. Help?

Thank you, Debbie. Since we are talking of "lack of vacancy", the singular sounds better to me. If you lack one, you've lacked it.

: Hi António, I'll think you'll find this term is used almost exclusively as a regulatory concept "within" the overall vacancies available, e.g. there must be so many black/asian/coloured/female/male students etc - i.e. a form of affirmative action
