supervisor
I'm guessing from your context that you mean the person who keeps on eye on the work that you do in preparing a thesis or dissertation - the person you discuss the outline of the thing with and talk about progress with as it continues. If so, that would be a supervisor in BE.

Thanks, my daughter is just writing her BA thesis (Diplomarbeit) and she has been assigned a tutor who sort of guides her, answers questions, reviews etc.

: Only a few US hits for this and I couldn't find any in the UK - it certainly isn't in common use and doesn't immediately signal thesis/dissertation supervision. Your link also has "supervisor of the diploma work" and there's no reason not to use that.

Quite agree with "supervisor of the diploma work" as an acceptable option, Ian Harknett, but IMHO nibody can tell anything for sure without more context.

: Cannot be used w.r.t. theses. It suggests too intrusive a relationship between the "supervisor" who "instructs" the student. A student needs to be "guided", but the piece needs to be stuedent's own, otherwise problems with intellectual property.

Why are so sure of a liberal relationship between the "tutor" (using EdithK's version) & the "student", mstkwasa?

: I agree with Kenneth, my boss is one! And in the USA, it usually the same people who are advisors and examiners.

That's the most common way of saying it in the US.
