Ich hatte Brustschmerzen als ich auf die treppe gestiegen hatte

oder, als ich die Treppe stieg.

That would be fine; but this is spoken German, and it's perfectly acceptable to mix Präteritum and Perfekt .
disagree stra : "als ich die Treppe gestiegen bin" might be acceptable as colloquial German, but it is definitely not correct in terms of grammar.
