German term

aufschneiden

German to English Tech/Engineering
After drilling, countersinking, filing and sawing I am dealing with THREAD CUTTING now.
The entire sentence reads:
Der Bolzendurchmesser muss etwa um 0.1 x Steigung des Gewindes kleiner sein als der Gewindedurchmesser, weil die Werkstoffe, z.B. Stahl, aufschneiden.
This refers to the cutting of external threads of course. "Aufschneiden" is the problem here, it obviously has the effect that the diameter becomes wider.

Michael

open up

The following is from Machinery's Handbook 25 in a section on "Materials for Externally Threaded Products":
For driving, in nonferrous material, lubrication may not be needed. The use of medium gear oil for driving in aluminum is recommended. American research has observed that the minor diameter of lubricated tapped holes in non-ferrous materials may tend to close in, that is, be reduced in driving; whereas with an unlubricated hole the minor diameter may tend to open up.
Just a guess, since your application involves steel, but the term "open up" sounded like it might fit the meaning of your sentence. HTH, Beth.

deform, are pushed outward with the pressure of cutting

As I understand your nice complete context, a steel bolt is placed in a machine for cutting threads along its shaft. The Boltzendurchmesser is the diameter the bolt has going in. The Gewindedurchmesser (Ernst says) is the diameter the outer envelope of threads has when coming out. How does this diameter widen? Think of metal. It is sort of a very heavy fluid in molecular terms, namely malleable, as any course in the subject tells you. When pressure is placed by the cuttin tool, some metal is peeled off like an apple peel to make the thread. But also, pressure has pushed the maleable metal outward on the sides of the cutting line. Therefore there are two components to the axial pitch of the newly cut thread: Some has been cut off, to make the valleys on the shaft, some has been pushed outward, increasing the ridge height. Your verb needs to express what the metal does. Deform is a good possibility. You could also say the metal (Werkstoff) is pushed outward. HTH, Nancy
