It's a trade name

for a chicory-based coffee substitute made by Nestle:

agree Rebecca Holmes : or cereal-based coffee substitute

agree Armorel Young : no caffeine in it, poor things. Various similar things available in England - the best-known is Barleycup.

"Maggi") :-))))

agree Kathinka van de Griendt : it's yummy, caffein-free malt coffee which I've been drinking since I was weeny teeny.

And yes it\'s inferior. Germany used to limit importation of coffee & hence came up with this

John Bowden is right, this is the trade name of this roasted grain coffee. I would suggest the asker put the explanation in brackets.

Allrightalready, everybody agrees it tastes like mud. And I'm back to real coffee. Call it a temporary necessity -- oh all right, I was breastfeeding at the time. Now you've got the truth outta me.
agree Dr. Fred Thomson : In WW II we called this stuff Mukifuk

Pero coffee

I know I'm very late, but I wanted to add my $0.03: I found Pero coffee at a WalMart in Amarillo, TX. It is my "Carokaffee".
"Natural beverage with coffee-like taste - Product of Germany", sometimes also "Product of Switzerland".
