German term

Betrachter

German to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
"Angeschnittene Häuserfronten oder zeitlich verschobene Perspektiven irritieren den Betrachter in der Wahrnehmung und suggerieren einen hohen Grad an Authentizität."

What DO you call someone who looks at a painting in a museum (i.e. the artist's "audience"). Personally, I find "beholder" too heavy-handed, "viewer" too TV-oriented and can't think of anything better. It is a word which pops up all over the place in this text, so I don't want to paraphase it if I can help it.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

Ian

observer

Titian's paintings never fail to delight the observer. His richness of colour and the subtlety of his brushwork lure the eye into.....

You can use the eye as well later on?

within art contexts, I have seen references to "observer's views" HTH

"viewer" is OK

It's the word most commonly used in discussions of painting, and at the moment I can't think of anything better!

"Do I simply want my abstract painting to be beautiful?
• Do I intend this abstract painting to convey something specific to the viewer?
• Do I want people to extract their own meaning from it?"
Peer comment(s):

agree NGK : I was going to suggest "perceiver," but you already have "perception" in the sentence. Observer is okay, but I'd prefer viewer as well.

agree Tanja Kaether (X) : viewer's perception sounds much better than observer's

agree heikeb : "Observer" for me implies that there is some kind of activity going on that can be observed. More like "Zuschauer"

the person viewing the painting

Why not consider this? Yes, it's more long-winded, but it's possibly also more authentic in terms of actual usage.
