I found some interesting background info at the following location. The German equivalent to "fireteam" is probably "Trupp", while the "squadron" would be a "Gruppe". The former is not necessarily lead by an NCO, the latter usually by an "Unteroffizier" or a "Stabsunteroffizier", so the German system appears somewhat more flexible than the US system depicted at the link given.
