Хотя я видела в комментариях отдельные примеры классиков-ученых, это употребляется обычно в применении не к людям, а к их трудам( в науке, литературе,музыке,пр.). Конечно, можно заменить (основатели,великие мыслители, гении и т.д.), но если Вы хотите употребить именно это слово-то применительно к их трудам. Я вначале спросила зятя(он американец и выпустился по математике), как называют у них это и есть ли такое слово classic(s).Он был удивлен - конечно,есть, привел примеры: теория Х, формула У. Я уточнила- а Х,У? Для нас это же привычное слово. Ответ был - не по отношению к людям, а к их трудам. Проверила в сети - действительно ссылки на труды и пр.,наткнулась на интересную информацию. Пусть выскажутся здесь великие писатели.
