She won't tell us, it's a secret ...
Ana Vozone Nov 10, 2022:
@Cristina Can you please let us know the term you used in the end?
AllegroTrans Nov 7, 2022:
What is the answer you found elsewhwhere? Please share it with us
AllegroTrans Nov 7, 2022:
Asker You say "just an expression", but what is the context? a letter? an email? a dialogue in a book or play?
If your client is simply asking you to translate "a string" then there is no single right answer
philgoddard Nov 7, 2022:
There must be some context, unless you've been asked to translate just these three words. If it's a list of strings, what do the others say?
Cristina Heraud-van Tol (asker) Nov 7, 2022:
There is no context. Just a string.
AllegroTrans Nov 7, 2022:
Also The full sentence please. There are several ways to say this and the most appropriate answer is heavily dependent on the context
philgoddard Nov 7, 2022:
We need the context, please.

calculate by sight

This could be an option - but as Phil notes in the discussion section, without more context we don't know what the Goldilocks option will be.
Example sentence:

I learn to calculate by sight what will fit into the lock and what won't...

Surveyors take out their equipment to measure and calculate by sight on the ground

rough estimate

Another suggestion if you want to sound very polite, but as it has been discussed above, without further context it is hard to be accurate.
