Alla lettera, corrisponderebbe a "Dottore" o "Dottoressa" per le donne (in Italia "dottore" non si usa solo per i medici, ma per i laureati in genere).
Tuttavia, in Italia chiamare un avvocato "dottore" può risultare assai sgradito, se non offensivo (si usa per i praticanti avvocato, i tirocinanti).
Quindi:
- se riferito a professioni come notaio ecc. tradurrei senza dubbio con "dottore";
- se riferito ad un avvocato, dipende:
a) se "Maître" è usato da solo, può andare bene tradurre con "avvocato", come proposto dai colleghi;
b) se usato insieme ad "avocat", come spesso accade (es. Maître Avocat MARTIN...), semplicemente evito di tradurre "Maître" https://www.alexia.fr/avocat-726794/avocat-martin-chevallier...

in Italia invece chi ha fatto un dottorato di ricerca, anche in ambito giuridico, è "dottore DI RICERCA" (spesso, ad esempio su Linkedin, si può trovare Ph.D., abbreviazione dell'antico Philosophiae Doctor che non riguarda solo l'ambito della filosofia).
Invece, "il titolo di "DOTTORE" appartiene a chiunque abbia una laurea, in qualunque disciplina" (v. sito dell'Accademia della Crusca https://accademiadellacrusca.it/it/consulenza/dott-e-dr-che-... quindi a prescindere che si tratti di medico o altro. Per quanto riguarda l'ambito giuridico "dottore" si usa dunque ad esempio anche per giudici e pubblici ministeri. Per gli avvocati si evita appunto perché "dottore" è riservato ai praticanti avvocato, cioè ai tirocinanti che non hanno ancora passato l'esame di abilitazione.
