Head lighthouse keeper vs. Lighthouse keeper

This seems to be some good reading. Look up 'Keeper'

agree Adrian MM. : funnily enough, at English uni. linguistic/s lectures / exams, a lighthouse-keeper vs. a light (duties) housekeeper had been taken as a classic example of ambiguity caused by hyphenation and pronunciation.

Principal lightkeeper and assistant lightkeeper

I offer these as the UK/Ireland English version in parallel to Deane's US English.
As all lighthouses in UK, Ireland, Sweden, USA and probably other English speaking countries are now automated, we are talking about historical titles.
There was a third category "Supernumerary lightkeeper" for assistant lightkeepers "not yet appointed to a lighthouse", which is probably the closest translation for 'fyrbiträde'
Note no "house'"in these titles.
