English term
5-fold dilutions
English to Spanish
Science
Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng
No matter where the half-max falls in a series of ******5-fold dilutions******, it is no more than 2.2-fold ("middle" [square root] of a 5-fold step) away from a data point -- so the coverage of the range is thorough and even.
When you need to cover several factors of ten (several "orders of magnitude") with a series of dilutions, it usually makes the most sense to plot the dilutions (relative concentrations) on a logarithmic scale. This avoids bunching most of the points up at one end and having just the last point way far down the scale.
A further two ****5-fold dilutions *****were then carried out using the remaining diluted spiked starting material to produce HYU/1 and HYU/2 respectively
Hola
Por 5-fold yo entiendo cinco veces encontré:
“The dilution factor is 5" “It was a 5 fold dilution” “It was diluted 1/5" These all mean the same thing, that there is 1 volume part of sample and 4 volume parts of whatever liquid is being used to dilute the sample for a total of 5 volume parts.
Pero no entiendo cómo traducirlo.
Gracias

una series de diluciónes a 1:5
I think this is probably the clearest way of putting it.

: yeap. but diluciones without accent ;-) and thanks for sharing the Future Science article. I just hate too the indiscriminate use of "fold" in English. So misleading.

: Correct. Diluciones 1:5 (without the a) o al 20%.

diluciones quíntuples
Explanation:

I think more than 50% of the scientific articles I review include this error - the authors don't understand the statistics they use to justify their results and conclusions, which is really embarrassing as a fellow scientist.
Please see here for a discussion on why "fold" should not be used. Of course, I'm afraid this doesn't help you translate it.
Let's abolish ‘fold higher’ and ‘fold increase’ from our lexicon

Referencia: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilución_en_serie
