French term

feutré

French to English Other Architecture
I've seen feutré translated as 'quietly refined', 'understated elegance', 'plush', and 'cosy'? Any alternatives for this context?

The write-up is about the redesign of an interior.

Du papier peint à la réorganisation de l’espace, l’équipe a créé un concept texturé, coloré et feutré.

Discussion

Lara Barnett Oct 19, 2021:
@ Robert - Subdued I also add "subdued" to my alternatives. I almost posted this word in the beginning before referring to thesaurus.com, where I changed my wording, evidently causing my current unpopularity, and for which only about one person had the intelligence to deal with.
However, I feel this may also be an option.
Lara Barnett Oct 18, 2021:
feutre I am referring to the soft feel of "feutre", feutre on its own does not signify a colour, but a sort of cushion-ey softness. Used in this phrase however, it has been listed next to the idea of colours - otherwise it would not refer to colours at all - hence my own alternative suggestion of "mellow", which has a general idea of calm, and to which I only added the idea of "Muted" because it appeared in thesaurus.com alongside "mellow", which seems to have been ignored here I guess.
Conor McAuley Oct 18, 2021:
Colours: "feutré" puts me in mind of an independent cinema before the film starts, all burgundy-coloured chairs and so on, very soothing...soothing?
Lara Barnett Oct 18, 2021:
Colours I actually think, without intending to push my own suggestions, that the use of "confortable" later on probably refers to softer more neutral use of colours, which has for a long time been used to give a feel of luxury and comfort as they can be more relaxing to the eye - so I think the word definitely alludes to colour shading, although I am sure the place is also quite physically comfortable if it is a high-end design project. Although I did suggest "mellow" as it could refer to features other than those of colour choice.
Conor McAuley Oct 18, 2021:
I'm sure you posted in good faith Lara.

These things happen.
Lara Barnett Oct 18, 2021:
@ Barbara and Writeaway I posted my answer without noticing the comment made in the discussion box, following my normal process of searching thesaurus, collocations dictionaries and online usage (which I often post as example sentences, often leading to delays in posting my suggestions). If you would like me to remove my suggestion, there are possibilities for you to do that.
writeaway Oct 18, 2021:
Agree with others who agree with Helene. Too bad she didn't post it as an answer herself. She deserves the credit (aka pointzzzz)
Lara Barnett Oct 18, 2021:
@ Barbara Muted and Mellow are synonyms, which oth appear together when a translator does the appropriate research. Please direct plagiarism complain ts through the correct channel.
Emmanuella Oct 18, 2021:
C'est bien ainsi que je l'entends ( cf. mon post ci-dessous).
Robert Such (asker) Oct 17, 2021:
Later in the write-up it says

Nous avons sélectionné du mobilier robuste et confortable pour un environnement feutré.

So cosy might be right.
Robert Such (asker) Oct 17, 2021:
Yes, feutré is referring to the redesign of the space as well..
Emmanuella Oct 17, 2021:
Il faut également tenir compte de la réorganisation de l'espace qui vous permet d'obtenir une ambiance 'feutrée'.
Helen Shiner Oct 17, 2021:
Also agree with Helene
Saeed Najmi Oct 17, 2021:
Agree with Helene, the texture is soothed and softened.
Helene Tammik Oct 17, 2021:
I associate it with a tactile “sensoriality” (as they say ;-) esp given that they also use “texturè” here, and also a sort of muted, soft effect on the senses. So it’s all about quiet luxury, and your senses being soothed and not jolted. I’d go for something along the lines of “an environment that soothes the soul/senses with its muted colors and rich textures”

cozy

Selon moi, c'est l'adjectif préféré des français dans ce contexte, i.e , a cozy atmosphere.

Restful

Muted is nice but describing a concept it lacks the serene slant of 'feutré' (and may contradict 'coloré'). Here is a possibility....

softly muted environment/feel

I think "muted" sounds odd on its own (sounds like you've turned the volume down) so it needs to be qualified & combined with the idea of the surroundings, so maybe something like "the team created a softly muted feel with rich textures and colours" or "an environment of softly muted colours and textures."

neutral philgoddard : As opposed to violently muted? I think "softly" is redundant.

:-) Yes, logically you're right, but for some reason "softly muted" is used quite a lot in various contexts (mainly sounds, colour, shininess) so I guess many of us have gotten used to it.
agree Yvonne Gallagher : "softly muted" often used in the design field

muted / mellow

Just an idea, if you want to keep the original structure. Perhaps:

"Our/The team created a concept that was textured, colorful and mellow."

If you don't think "colourful" is good with mellow, you could try:

"...textured, chromatic and mellow."

I used "mellow" because I think the idea is of muted colours, which are often used to achieve an elegant look. So maybe "muted" could even work....

Perhaps even using "variegated" could work here, if you chose "muted" or "mellow"....

"This gives rise to the colours in the kilim being 'broken' or variegated, as well as quite MELLOW and MUTED due to the nature of the dye matter."

"variegated" is just an alternative, used occasionally by describers of colour and decoration:
"You can also dedicate a wall to be a feature wall, where you can get creative with patterns and variegated colours."

Subdued - as per discussion box. e.g.

"The team created a concept that was textured, colorful and subdued."

This word could I think, like "mellow" be used either to qualify colours or general appearance, if you do not want to be specific in usage.

SUBDUED
"Think of white or cream kitchen cabinets, an overall neutral colour palette, and a SUBDUED DESIGN with simple architectural details."

"Cool colors include green, blue, and purple, are often more SUBDUED than warm colors. They are the colors of night, of water, of nature, and are usually calming, relaxing, and somewhat reserved."

neutral Barbara Carrara : To be fair, Helene T. was the first to offer 'muted' at 2pm (see Discussion panel) / Nope, you did not. Pls check timestamp. Just saying. No need to bring up plagiarism. Twice.

There is also need to discredit another translators glossary research through idle comments.
neutral Helene Tammik : Sorry Lara, I should have posted my suggestion properly, didn't mean to cause a ruckus! I don't agree with variegated, mellow, colourful or chromatic though, in this context.

No Problem. Variegated and Chromatic just suggestions. Both used for visual art (not just plants & photography). "where you can get creative with patterns & variegated colours." https://www.bramwellbrown.com/blogs/news/how-to-decorate-a-m...
