French term

3 p /an

Discussion

????? I think it is some sort of marking system for marking trimmings at the end of a press to avoid saw trimming errors.

But I have little to go on....

If they reduce production scrap by 50 tonnes per year, they will save 3 shifts (postes) per year on labour plus the cost of remelting the production scrap.
kE are kilo-euros or thousands of euros.

The sums are as follows:

3 shifts x 1800 euros/shift = 5400 euros
50 tonnes x 250 euros/tonne = 12500 euros

Total saving: 17900 euros

which, rounded, is the 18kE per year that they say they will save.

agree Tony M : Brilliant! I'd got round to the almost same idea, but hadn't figured out it was the LABOUR cost!

COMMENT

It certainly SEEMS to be a dimensionless numeric value, but I'm blessed if I can even guess at what the 'p' might be being used to stand for! 3 'somethings' per press/year. I'm just as mystifed as I was before...
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tom Bishop : p = poste. 3 press shifts per year (and not per press per year as I also first thought).

Thnaks, Tom! You've clearly hit the nail on the head there; excellent detective work!

(see comment)

The "equation" at the end of the extract, implies that p is equivalent to 3.055555 (since 3p*1.8 kE+50 t * 0.250 kE/t is 18 kE; therefore 3p*1.8 kE is 18 - 12.5, or 5.5).
Apart from that I've no idea. Ask the client.

Sorry, that should be 3p = 3.055555, so p = 1.0185185 (still not very helpful!)
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tom Bishop : p is in fact 1800 euros, the cost of one press production shift.

That seems to be right, so the 18 kE should, if stated accurately, be 17.9 kE.
