From An Art History Book
Contexte :
Merci Beaucoup,
Barbara

A jagged pyramid of frames
Might work, less spindly than bristling or spiky?

: wrong assumption - in fact in the next sentence you can see that there were ALSO paintings in this pyramid => it was not a pyramid OF ... but a a pyramid including also "des cadres et des châssis" visible on the contour

a pyramid of frames
In the context of a museum, I think "frame" is the right translation for both "cadre" et "chassis".

The stretchers are what holds the canvas tight for painting. They are left in place when framing. In this reference you can see how to remove the frame from a painting and its stretcher without damaging them. (In FR and EN)

: To me this implies the pyramid was made of something else and had frames and stretchers attached to it. It's like saying 'a traffic jam bristling with cars' :-)
