Discussion

Jonathan Spencer (asker) Oct 19, 2020:
Hi Johannes. I think you're probably right that a hatch is more likely in this context. These are safety instructions for erecting and dismantling scaffolding, so I think a hatch would make more sense here than a manhole.
Johannes Gleim Oct 18, 2020:
@ Jonathan The term is context-sensitive. Both propositions could be right or wrong. A 'manhole' is used mainly to enter a tank or reservoir like a submarin, while a hatch with extension ladders is often found in buildings below the roof for steps. Anyway, for scaffolding a hatch is more probable than a manhole.

What is your application, the purpose and arrangement of this 'Luke'?
Steffen Walter Oct 18, 2020:
Incorrect German spelling The correct spelling would be "Luke".

Thanks, also for your peer comment!
agree Steffen Walter : Just "hatch", on second thought, because this appears to be a single hatch used for both ascent and descent.

manhole

That is what we call them in the USA. Used for both going up and going down, so that is just assumed.

neutral Steffen Walter : Changed to "neutral" because of the link provided in Andrew's comment on the other answer.

ascent and descent access opening

Scaffolds very often allow just sufficient room for workers access and egress the working platform through a ladder access opening.
Example sentence:

Keep the scaffold ascent and descent access opening always closed.
