I don't understand the meaning of this phrase. Could you, please, explain to me what does it mean?

Line: Well, not everyone would stand up against such enormous difficulties, preserving the old graces. Scotsman devoted to his family.

Things change almost yearly and the old graces are out of style, are changed, or even make room for the more recent fashions

traditional values

He is saying that in the face of such adversity, he still managed to keep hold of traditional values, morals or duties.

And I would also say that there is a nuance by the use of the word "grace" (when so many other words could have been used), which suggests that, by managing to uphold these values amidst such difficulties, this guy has acquired a kind of elegance, charm or moral worth.

You would say "preserving (or even "cherishing") traditional values

...unti he almost has a kind of pious aura around him.

I.e. the nuanced use of this noun has an association of piousness.

My use of "values" can be explained through the expression "SOCIAL VALUES". This may explain the idea:

"SOCIAL VALUES are most important aspects of a social system, which play a predominant role in running and maintaining the social order. They provide not only the general guidelines for social conduct and behaviour, but also establish the norms in society."

The point with using the term "preserving/upholding traditional VALUES" is that it is strongly implied that the character/person in question has been carrying out his/her duties, tasks, lifelong efforts etc in a way that keeps sight of these traditions.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : But it's not really about the values as such, but rather, the gracious manners that may or may not have gone with them.

Yes, but I would say its about both, hence my comment about the character using the term "graces" rather than actually saying manners or values or whatever.// And using "preserving traditional" alongside "values" does not qualify it's meaning in any way?
