Limiter la mortalité de la faune aquatique liée au bruit inhérent au ***plantage des pieds*** des éoliennes en procédant à un battage progressif (soft start) et en prévoyant des dispositifs de réduction du bruit (rideau de bulles).

"plantage des pieds" was translated as "footfall" (of wind turbines)

Besides the fact that I can't find "footfall" or "plantage des pieds" anywhere, what are we talking about?

I think it's when the base of the wind turbine is placed in the ground ("piling" perhaps?)

It's not "failure" is it? like "plantage d'un système"

This would refer specifically to offshore wind turbines - the curtain of bubbles is a good clue: they act as an effective acoustic barrier to water-borne sound, though low frequency sound transmitted through the sea bed is another issue. There is quite lot of information on the web about offshore piling and the installation of wind turbines.

But... I doubt the noise is due to 'driving' the feet into the ground, because the solutions proposed to limit the noise are soft starts and some form of noise mitigation mechanisms. That would suggest that the noise is present all the time, that it resonates through the 'feet' of the turbine. I would suggest that in using the term 'plantage', the author is simply nominalising 'planter', so something along the lines of 'placement'. However, if that is so, it's kind of redundant in English.

To: Asker The context (especially the "battage") suggests "pile driving", but the common French term for "pile" is pieu. I cannot find much support for "pieds"--> "piles".

There's a good paper on this subject at http://www.vliz.be/imisdocs/publications/298865.pdf

It specifically relates to construction of wind turbine foundations, not the noise while the turbine is in operation.

Page 43 in particular discusses the use of bubble curtains to mitigate the underwater noise transmission of piling the foundations of wind turbines.

agree Ed Ashley : Good work, John. I read 'soft start' as pertaining to the operation of the actual wind turbine. A bit of a red herring, so to speak!

agree chris collister : Apologies, I hadn't read your comments before adding mine above! The "soft start" mentioned is, IMO, a misnomer, or at best ambiguous.

Thanks. Pages 40 and 45 of the reference document refer to a "soft start" procedure, although it is not elaborated.

agree Daryo : the "soft start" is about the pilling - start pilling at low power and increase the energy of the shocks progressively, to warn the marine animals and give them time to escape the noisy zone
