Hi

How do you say "I'm married." idiomatically in Amharic?

I ask because "Lonely Planet Amharic" (p. 156) has አግብቻለሁ, which I can't make any sense of.

Best

ባለትዳር ነኝ

The common and more formal way of saying "I am married" is ባለትዳር ነኝ

But in casual conversations you can also say አግብቻለሁ.

ባለ ትዳር ነኝ

"ባለ ትዳር ነኝ" is more convenient than "አግብቻለሁ" when expressing marriage status. It can be used for both genders without confusion.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Eyob Fitwi : The idea is right, but 'ባለ' is a prefix, and prefixes do not stand alone. They must be conjoined to the base word.

ትዳር አለኝ

The word 'Marriage' is an abstract noun. A noun can be concrete or abstract. Therefore, the proposed translations "ባለትዳር ነኝ" doesn't flow with this noun. And it is a direct and literal translation of the word. Even though "noun + አለኝ" sounds natural, too signify ownership of a certain now, this particular abstract noun should be treated differently. Therefore, it should be translated as : "ትዳር አለኝ"። It is a practical and functional way of using the phrase.
For such types of nouns ".. አለኝ"  would be best translation, than "..ነኝ"
Example sentence:

እኔ ኢትዮጲያዊ ነኝ። ትዳር አለኝ። ልጆች አሉኝ። ሃገሬን በጣም እወዳለው።
