For measuring the concentration of diacetyl, the committee decided (after much deliberation), to recommend the Gjertsen, Undstrup and Trolle method, using a *steam-jacketed still* for distillation, followed by electron-capture gas chromatography. The lack of a rugged and quantitative FAN method in worts was another source of potential headaches for brewers. The Satake method sought to alleviate the concerns around reproducibility, predating the use of the EBC Ninhydrin method by five years.
