Mesopotamia

is the historical/biblical name of Iraq, but I would not use it in the English text. It is one of these stylistic things. In German and French, it is good style to use several terms to describe one object. In English, it is not. (At least, this is mostly true)

agree Robert Schlarb : Probably all most Americans have heard of; if you say "land between the two rivers" most will think of the Hudson and the Potomac!

the land between the rivers

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zweistromland Mesopotamia

(Greek, "between the rivers") is the alluvial plain between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers (in contemporary Iraq). Writings from Mesopotamia are the earliest written work in the world, giving Mesopotamia the reputation of being the cradle of civilization.

Peer comment(s):

agree Mario Marcolin : Two-River Land [In Aramaic Beth Nahrain] though I guess Mesopotamia is more known in English --,
