magnet Extended Learning Program

Hello, mandrade77!: Are you sure about the meaning of ELP? We need more context.

ELP is the acronym for Extended Learning Program. In Salt Lake City School District, we believe that students possess a continuum of academic talents and potentials that necessitate our providing a continuum of services in curriculum and instruction. The ELP program seeks to serve those students at the high end of the range who possess unique gifts and abilities to succeed in an academic setting. West High School provides magnet ELP services to 7th and 8th grade students. Those who are identified receive specific curriculum and instruction that includes both increasing a student's access to knowledge through increasing depth and complexity, as well as acceleration when appropriate. Our task is to create opportunities for all students to learn something new every day.

Magnet ELP: The Magnet ELP (MELP) will include Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Science, and Foreign Language. The criterion for enrollment is based upon District testing.

Magnet ELP Language Arts (MELP): 7th /8th Grade – Full Year
MELP Language Arts focuses on reading, writing, speaking, thinking and listening. Beyond the Utah State Core MELP Language Arts provides enrichment extensions and differentiation to meet the individual gifted needs. It focuses on the idea of “cognitive stretching” in that the students are focusing on deep meaningful thinking. This is accomplished via interaction with novels and writing. Novels chosen for accelerated academic levels require close reading and deeper engagement. The students grapple with social awareness and interactions while engaging in discussions of readings and essay prompts. Reading and writing focus on how, who and where we are in the world and society with student considerations focused on: how do we see this piece of writing and how does it see us.
