English term

music fruition

English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. Sociology research paper
Dear colleagues,

I'm translating (European PT> EN) a paper on music festivals and how they are experienced by festival-goers. Although the paper is in Portuguese, the abstract was already written in English. And in the abstract the author uses the term 'music fruition' in the sense of 'enjoyment of music'. I wouldn't like to post a full sentence from the paper for confidentiality reasons.

'Fruição' in Portuguese can mean enjoyment, and I gather from the Oxford dictionary (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/fruition) that the word's origin was related to enjoyment too.

But the meaning has changed, so using 'fruition' here seems wrong to me. Also, all the Google hits I get are about the Fruition Music label, which doesn't help.

So my question is, would you leave it as 'music fruition' or change it to 'enjoyment of music'? Or something else??

Thanks in advance for your comments and help.

Are you dealing with a faulty translation from Portuguese by the author? It may be best to start with the original Portuguese and go from there. So posting this on Portuguese monolingual and/or Portuguese-English may be the best option.

You must change it, in my view. "Fruition" no longer means enjoyment in modern English and will not be properly understood (it now means "fulfilment). I would use "enjoyment", if that is clearly what the author intends. I also mention the common phrase "music appreciation", which is a set expression for essentially the same idea. There are (or used to be) music appreciation societies for people to share their enjoyment of music. But probably "enjoyment of music" is what you want here.
