constituent crime
It means an intermediate crime completed along the way to a completed crime. For example, a homicide would be a reato mezzo constituting part of the offense of murder for the purpose of burglary, where the only element missing from the reato mezzo is the theft. But I don't know an EN legal term for this. Constituent crime is descriptive but isn't a technical legal term.

In EN US law there is a term "lesser included offense" where the intermediate crime is lesser (less serious) than the completed crime - for example, conspiracy to murder, preparatory to murder. Not sure but I think reato mezzo can be more serious than the ultimate crime, as in the murder/burglary example above, and thus not translatable as lesser included offense.
