Eu referi que as ordens "take profits" estão relacionadas com a expressão "locking in sure winners". Estas ordens "take profits" são ordens para executar/fechar um contrato quando o investidor alcança um nível de ganhos desejado. Ele pode fazê-las, por ex., para garantir o seu "break-even". Ao fazer uma ordem destas, o investidor está a fixar ("lock") os ganhos possíveis, mas também está a limitá-los, sobretudo porque normalmente dão esta ordem prematuramente.

Creio pois que é este o sentido desta expressão do Eckhardt: "locking in sure winners" é uma posição confortável e cautelosa porque permite garantir um ganho mínimo desejado, mas ao fechar um contrato ganhador impede eventuais maiores ganhos.

@Ana "selling on strength and buying on weakness" é aquilo que normalmente o mercado faz, mas o Eckhardt é um "contrarian", tem precisamente uma abordagem contrária: é por isso que ele diz que "selling on strength and buying on weakness" é uma das tais posições confortáveis "that run counter to sound trading principles".

@Vítor Por acaso aqui acho que não é como o Vítor diz, porque o texto que se segue à expressão em causa fala em "selling on strength and buying on weakness", a que o Vítor se refere como ordens de "take profits", ou, em situações de pânico, o famoso "Sell! Sell! Sell!"

É por isso que penso que, neste caso, "lock in" tem o sentido que referi na minha resposta:
lock something in
to make something, such as a rate of interest, permanent over a period of time. You should try to lock in a high percentage rate on your bonds. We locked in a very low rate on our mortgage.

Penso que a tradução literal seria algo como "realizar/fechar ganhadores garantidos", e a intenção neste texto é referir que esta escolha é uma "escolha confortável" que contraria "os sólidos príncipios de negociação" porque é uma escolha prematura, limita os ganhos e impede a possibilidade de maiores ganhos.
Entre outras razões, os investidores podem fazer esta escolha porque têm medo da inversão da tendência.

Penso que esta expressão " locking in sure winners" está relacionada com as ordens "take profits", em que se ordena que se vendam títulos mal seja atingido um determinado ganho/lucro. Embora estas ordens possam garantir um certo lucro, impedem a possibilidade de um lucro maior.
Este "locking in" determina a execução/realização/fecho do contrato/posição.
