Chinese term

填料(碳酸钙)

Chinese to English Tech/Engineering Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng filler or packing
It is used in the manufacture of rosin size. According to dictionaries, 填料 means filler, packing etc.
I once asked a colleagure on this question that when 填料 should be filler and when it be packing through telephone. It seems that he said sometimes it should be packing and sometimes be filler. But I did not understand comletely what he meant. Here it may be filler. Who can tell me when 填料 should be translated as filer and when it be as packing?

Wonderful! Hi, Yueyin, Thanks! Wonderful! So detailed an analysis! So the used in the biological treatment of waste water is also called packing?

Filler (calcium carbonate)

It depends on the context whether 填料means packing or filler. In the case of calcium carbonate, I believe it is called filler.

When a material is used to seal a joint to prevent from leakage, as in your pipeline example, it is usually called packing. In industry, when a material is used to pack a distillation or washing tower (column) in order to increase the contact surface between different phases (liquid, vapor or gas), it is also called packing.

A filler is usually mixed into a matrix (基体材料). A packing material usually stands alone.

See http://www4.ncsu.edu/~hubbe/CARB.htm
\"Function: CaCO3 is used as a filler for making bright, opaque paper at minimum cost. Calcium carbonate also keeps the pH in the alkaline range (unless controlled with \"acid-tolerant\" technology). The rosette form of PCC filler tends to produce a bulkier sheet of paper; when calendered it yields improved smoothness at given levels of caliper.\"

According to 美国传统词典, filler - something added in order to augment weight or size or fill space. In this sense, it usually generates some physical effects. However, filler may not necessarily be a powder. It can also be a liquid or even a gas. For example, oil can be filled into rubber to produce 充油橡胶, thus improving its performance and reducing production cost.

For 助剂, “auxiliary” is fine. You may also use “additive”. 助剂 may not necessarily result in chemical changes. For example, emulsifier (乳化剂) is often used as an additive, but it doesn’t result in chemical changes.

总之,具体情况要具体对待。

filler, stuff

~{Ln~} to complete, to fill in to make it complete
~{AO~} substance, matter, ingredient, material

-----------
"packing". I am not sure about the context of the translation you are on now. "packing" is possible if in order to complete something, you have to use some material covering it instead of filling stuff (substance) into a space. Well, be honest, I rarely see this word used in this way.

汉英分类插图词典(造纸的原材料): 填充料 = filling material, filler

外研社\'汉英词典\':
填充塔 (petroleum) = packed column, packed tower
填料 = packing, stuffing, filling, filler

=> I agree with others, it seems to depend on the industry.
(有时候可能可以说填料或者填充料)

Peer comment(s):

agree Mari_R_ : ~{Ln~} = to make it complete; filling in to complete smthg. ~{AO~} = substance. Thus, the word itself is close to 'filler' or 'stuff'. It could even extend the translation of "ingredient", "substance", depending on context.
