Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Feb 1, 2004:
Thanks to all of you.
Finally I decided to put down: Taught French to preschoolers age 3 to 5; used games, puppet shows, and songs as class activities.

Fuad Yahya Feb 1, 2004:
Thank you, Yolanta. We are getting there.
Non-ProZ.com Feb 1, 2004:
this is a resume describing experience:
e.g.from-to(as a resume usually goes)
French Teacher
Taught French to preschoolers age 3 to 5 using(through, through the use of...)?
games,songs,puppets shows(clown _:)) ) etc...
Fuad Yahya Feb 1, 2004:
Pina's answer brings a new twist to this fragment of a sentence. What is the full sentence?
Non-ProZ.com Feb 1, 2004:
Pina,it's about teaching French, than should be "taught French to prescholers"?,
I guess...
Fuad Yahya Feb 1, 2004:
Thanks, Yolanta. It is "preschooler."
Non-ProZ.com Feb 1, 2004:
YesFuad ,thanks-my question is which would be a better choice : "using" or "through"
and the spelling of "prescholer"
Fuad Yahya Feb 1, 2004:
What exactly is the question?
Fuad Yahya Feb 1, 2004:
Your question reads as though your are asking which would be a better choice, "using" or "through."
Fuad Yahya Feb 1, 2004:
It is "preschooler."
Non-ProZ.com Feb 1, 2004:
prescholar or pre-scholar?

through

I have nothing against "using" except that some reader might take it as a modifier of "preschooler." So "through" is a better option in that regard.

Pina\'s answer below has introduced an interesting angle to this bewildering question. The confusion surrounding this question is unnecessary. It can be avoided by stating your question fully and clearly.

The phrase \" taught to preschoolers through games,songs...\" refers to a skill or competency in which preschoolers receive some training, as in \"quantitative skills can be taught to preschoolers through games,songs...\"

If you remove \"to,\" then the phrase becomes a sentence fragment from which the subject has been deleted, as in

\"I taught preschoolers through games,songs...\"

The verb \"taught\" in such a sentence is an intransitive verb, referring to the activity of teaching in general, without attempting to specifiy any skill or competency.

It would be very helpful to you to state as much about the sentence you are trying to build, how it will be used (For instance, is part of a resume, or is it about a preschooler skills), and what is it you are trying to ascertain. The more we know, the better we can help you.

Thank you for the clarification (and thanks to Pina for seeing through the fog). Now we have an object for the verb.

For a resume item, I would break the statement using a semicolon followed by a verb parallel to \"taught,\" as follows:

- Taught French to preschoolers age 3 to 5; used games, puppet shows, and songs as class activities.

Or something like that.

I taught preschoolers, in what setting?, what was taught? how much use?

'I taught to preschoolers' sounds a little odd. Leave out the 'to'? -> 'I taught preschoolers'?

Ideas:

1 If it is the state education system, then there is early childhood education, primary education, secondary education...

I taught preschoolers (at a kindergarten, in the early childhood education system, in a children's holiday programme, at Sunday school...) using games, puppet shows and songs.

2 I taught preschoolers (health/social skills/language/ethical principles, the preschool curriculum) using/through games, puppet shows, and songs

3 I taught preschoolers...largely by means of/totally through/relying mainly on/relying solely on/using primarily/...

Taught children who haven't yet started school

I'm not quite sure what exactly your question is, but assuming you want to know the meaning of the word "preschoolers", it's children who have not yet started school. They may be at home, at an early education facility such as a day care centre or kindergarten, but they have not yet started school proper. As a general rule, they are children aged under 5 (the age at which they're required to start school - at least in New Zealand) or 6.

OK, forget what I\'ve said above, because it obviously doesn\'t pertain to what you actually want to know.

With regard to writing \"using\" or \"through\", you could rewrite the sentence altogether to say something like:

I used games, puppet shows and songs to teach French to preschoolers.

This wording is pretty unambiguous, I reckon.

a different alternative ...

Depending on how the rest of your text flows, you might consider:

Using games, puppet shows, and songs, I taught French to preschoolers.

Given your explanation that this is a resume, the sentence that Fuad suggests starting with \"Taught French ...\" is probably more suitable than this one. The above suggestion would work in a cover letter or a summary narrative.

taught preschoolers through the use of games, puppet shows and songs

You don't need "to". Also "preschoolers" is more commonly spelled as one word, as opposed to "pre-schoolers".

To answer your question above: If you are adding a subject that has been taught then I would write it as:

Taught French to preschoolers through the use of games, puppet shows and songs

I would avoid \"using games,...\" because it can sound like it\'s the preschoolers who are using the games, etc. That\'s why \"through the use of\" is a good alternative.
