English term

get to the core being

English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Hello everyone,

In one example that I used in working with managers at Shell Oil, I asked them whether they see Shell as an oil company or as an energy company. The answer to that is key to the company’s core vision. The two answers are very different, and each would lead to a different set of long-term aims and prospects, different research and development strategies, a different sense of Shell’s role in the larger economy, a different sense of identity and purpose (and hence a different degree of loyalty and commitment) in Shell employees. If Shell or other companies want genuine transformation programs, they must start at that level. They must ***get to the core thinking (and being!)*** that can reach and shift that level. And they must maintain, with suitable lead- ership and infrastructures, their capacity to tap freshly into that level of vision whenever necessary. A company, like an individual, must always be able to access its spiritual core. That is the only level from which it can shift its existing assumptions, leadership patterns, and corporate structure.

What does "get to the core being" mean?
Does it mean turn to, i.e. think about, the essence of the company (think about what the company is about)?

Thank you.

access their very essence/spiritual core

so it's saying that Shell as a company has a vision and a way of being, or core essence (I won't give my personal opinion o the accuracy of this!)

get to the core thinking (and being!) that can reach and shift that level.

Later on it says

"A company, like an individual, must always be able to access its spiritual core."

This is really saying that companies need to define their core essence or being to know what ethos/values and "long-term aims and prospects," they hold dear. so of Shell is defined as an oil company it will have very different "research and development strategies, a different sense of identity and purpose (and hence a different degree of loyalty and commitment) in Shell employees than if it identified itself as an energy company. So here the core essence to define is ether it is an oil or an energy company, with all the different values that would imply.

Thus, if "Shell or other companies want genuine transformation programs, they must start at that level". You could say that Shell's ethos (core values based on its core essence) would be different in these two cases in how they work, lead and manage the company

Sorry, typo "so of" should be "so IF (Shell is defined ...)

and "ether" should be "whether" (it is an oil or an energy company)
