Portuguese term

Vencimentos / descontos / líquido

Portuguese to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) Demonstrativo de Pago
This terms appear in a "Demonstrativo de Pago". In the box showing the list of items, only Vencimentos and Descontos, while all three of the above terms appear in the order towards the bottom outside said box. So this is what I'm thinking:

Vencimentos: Payable upon maturity
Descontos: Deductions
Líquido [Valor líquido?]: Net amount

Not sure if I have these right. Que opinam?

Mario Freitas Dec 13, 2016:
Vencimentos A) "Vencimentos" are the earnings, as opposed to B) "descontos" = deductions. The Net amount is the "líquido" = A - B.
This applies to Brazil as well, Gilmar.

Thanks! Should have mentioned it's for Brazil

@ Gilmar Excellent point
Gilmar Fernandes Dec 13, 2016:
European or Brazilian Portuguese ? Both answers so far could work, depending on which country the text is from. If European PT (either from Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, etc) then Nick's answer is fine. If for Brazil then I'd go with Charles - maturity dates, due dates, etc. I've lived in Brazil and never heard the term "vencimento" to mean salaries, income as it does in European PT.

Obrigado, Margarida!
agree Gilmar Fernandes : You're right....I just looked at some Brazilian "contracheques" in Google Images and I see what it means now. For some reason I thought "vencimentos" was only PT-pt for earnings.

Vencimentos is quite old-fashioned. Most people don't use it anymore. But it's in the CLT legislation, so... Obrigado, my friend!
