The Bono\'s of the world

English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Motivational Speech
When we look at the Bono's of the world, when we look at the leading sales professionals
in the world, when we look at the best leaders without a title, when we look at the masters of HR,
the masters of R&D, we look at the best business people, we say "She's gifted", we say "She's
smarter than me". She's better with people than me, she somehow just knows more than me.
She's got a better education, she had an easier background, she got lucky."

AllegroTrans Sep 1, 2016:
Misuse of apostrophe There is NO apostrophe in a plural - i.e. this should be Bonos
Sheila Wilson Sep 1, 2016:
@ BdiL I agree with your first sentence, at least partially, as I stated in my second paragraph. As for the rest of what you say, I was absolutely not making a discriminatory statement. You are taking my first sentence in isolation, whereas it needs to be understood along with the second sentence. In this particular phrasing, using a man's name causes a conflict. Of course a role model can be either gender.
BdiL Sep 1, 2016:
Totally disagree! Changing Bono to Malala would be thwarting the speaker's choice. But besides that, it's the approach that is the root of all real discrimination and will dig a furrow between two (apparent) worlds. Malala is for sure an icon of mine and I'm a MAN. I voted for my political representatives thinking who was the best and probably more than fifty percent have been women, nor was age a discriminant. I am male, "white", Italian and even my name means white, but does that bar me from having Madiba Nelson Mandela as a spiritual leader?! A black African! I disagree! As long as we deem that there's a barrier (even in representation) between males and females, that barrier will stay there. It's like blotting out ciggies in Humphrey Bogarts pics. My father was a very good driver, but I say I was lucky to learn from my mom, because she was superlative.

Good point ...
Sheila Wilson Sep 1, 2016:
Not a great choice It appears to be directed 100% at women, so the choice of a man's name isn't a brilliant one. "When we look at Bono we say SHE"?? If you can translate freely I'm sure it would be better to change this to a woman, e.g. Malala to bring it bang up to date.

But a lot depends on whether you're allowed to take such liberties and if you can check with whoever you need to check it with.

Bonos

people like Bono from U2, known for their activism and charitable activities
Peer comment(s):

neutral airmailrpl : I thought it was Sonny Bono from Sonny & Cher ??

well, with the U2 guy I can at least see some metaphoric explanation for this
agree TonyTK : (airmailrpl, you're showing your age - Sonny passed away nearly 20 years ago ... sadly, I remember watching S&C on TOTP in black and white)

the best unelected leaders in the world

or as it says in the text, "the best leaders without a title", like Bono (from U2 as Danya has said...well known for trying to bring the attention of world leaders (G8 etc) to problems of poverty, national debt, famine etc in the world.

So, although Bono is not a politician, or elected to a position of power, he uses his fame to try and do good by discussing things with world leaders

lots of stuff on the web about his various campaigns but basically, the text is talking about leaders, people who are gifted at what they do. In Bono's case, not just musuc but raising awareness and being successful (in music AND his campaigns)

Many thanks:-)
agree Tina Vonhof (X) : As long as it's meant as an explanation, not a translation.

well Thanks! Yes, just add "like Bono" as I did and it gets over the gender hump. It's talking about leaders in general with him as an example
neutral AllegroTrans : I don't think a translator has the right to make this kind of change UNLESS the client approves...

where's the "change"? merely an explanation followed by LIKE BONO. I presume Asker is translating OUT of English so "Bonos" won't work alone; it has to be explained
