SeiTT (asker) Sep 11, 2016:
Just to clarify Thanks - but they do say Γιάντες rather than Θυμάμαι, don't they?
transphy Aug 31, 2016:
In the Anglo Saxon tradition, the party who has the largest piece of the wishbone, on breaking it apart, just makes a silent wish, hence 'wishbone'.

transphy Aug 31, 2016:
Yes, it has. When the 2 parties have pulled and broken the wishbone the game starts and, each party tries to catch the other party unawares by giving something to the other one, who has to say, 'I remember'. If not, the giver reminds the recipient that he/she looses the bet they played the game in the first instance.
SeiTT (asker) Aug 31, 2016:
Let me continue here. Thanks, Lina. Indeed.

It's just that Turkish has a saying, "Bile bile lades", which is used when you undertake something you know will not turn out well for you. Does something like this exist in Greek, something like, "Γιάντες - και τόξερα!", by any chance?

Btw, I've managed to find out that its ultimate origin is Persian "yād ast", literally "it is memory" i.e. "I remember", which accords well with the Greek game (but not the West European wishbone game, in which the person with the longer piece wins). The 'ast' in 'yād ast' is cognate with Ancient Greek ἐστί.

So, it seems to be a word like τεμπέλης, which has come into Greek via Turkish from Persian.

(noun) A central, Y, U or V-shaped bone in a bird's chest that is part of the pectoral girdle and helps stabilize the chest cavity for flight.
The wishbone or furcula is the fusion of a bird's two collarbones (clavicles) into a single structure. The furcula is then attached to the shoulders, and may also be fused to the sternum (breastbone) or simply attached with a strong tendon. These connections protect the chest cavity during flight, helping a bird keep its body shape and internal structure intact even under great stress.
The wishbone is flexible, and can expand up to 50 percent larger than its resting position in some species, depending on their overall flight style.

You are welcome. To answer your question, it's the winner, since at least three other translators agree.
Note from asker:
Many thanks, Lina! Is the winner "γιάντες", or is it the loser?
