English term

Non-Honours undergraduate degree programme

English to Russian Other Education / Pedagogy academic degree
Non-Honours undergraduate degree programme (including Designated degrees) normally require 3 years full-time study.

This phrase is taken from description of the Aberdeen University in Scotland.
Honours degree is a bachelor`s degree, as I`ve found. And how can Non-Honours be understood?
Please, help me understand the meaning of it and/or translate in into Russian or Ukrainian.
Thanks in advance.

@Sofia I have asked Natalie to help us with this question as a moderator? So you asked her to come and... tell that this is "бакалавр обычного уровня"? No, this is definitely not and I profoundly refuse any such intervention from a moderator's side. I highly recognize Natalie's knowledge as a medical and pharmaceutical translation specialist but applications for recognition of different degrees is definitely is a part of my main activities. If you want to criticize the answer, do it yourself, please. You do not want to consider a fact that less than 300 credits is a lower level of specialisation. It is very simple. And I would prefer to stay away from the dispute: it was not a fair play.

Viktoria - I have asked Natalie to help us with this question as a moderator and as a translator with many years of experience. Please note her comments.
Erzsébet Czopyk Jul 11, 2016:
@Sofia this degree is not recognized as BSc, only yours. The reason is I am sure because I do such projects (recognition of degree) we provide full service. So maybe in Australia but in the EU.
Sofia Gutkin Jul 11, 2016:
@Erzsébet A Bachelor degree IS an undergraduate degree! I don't understand why you are so convinced that this is some sort of "preparatory" degree! In Australia (and our system is likely based on the UK) a person can get a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Economics ***in three years***. It just means that they don't do an extra Honours year (which makes the degree 4 years). But it is ***still*** a recognised and complete undergraduate degree, and it is certainly higher than a diploma/certificate/some other course.

the Latin honours system used in the United States is different from the British system
Erzsébet Czopyk Jul 11, 2016:
Sofia you misunderstood this in not a BSc woth honors which is бакалавр... (с отличием) but an undergraduate programme whiuch exists only in Scotlad. this is unique and this is far below than the real бакалавр. (Sorry I am translating an another document so i am not capable to type in Russian at the moment). back to you later
Erzsébet Czopyk Jul 11, 2016:
absolutely not Non-Honours undergraduate degree programme - this below the BSc
Sofia Gutkin Jul 11, 2016:
So basically I agree with Igor ...
Sofia Gutkin Jul 11, 2016:
It can still be a Bachelor Degree If a degree is 3 years long, it can still be considered a Bachelor degree. Perhaps in this case, Honours is just not awarded. In my own case, my course was 4 years long, but Honours was awarded automatically to students who scored above a certain level. The other people still got their Bachelor degree, but without Honours. Hope this helps!
Igor Andreev Jul 10, 2016:

(Honours) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, University of Oxford (Balliol College

Achievements other than the average mark are often needed for a student to be awarded honours.

A "Bachelors" or "Honours" Level covers degrees with titles such as Bachelor of Arts, BA (Hons), Bachelor of Science, BSc (Hons), Bachelor of Engineering, BEng (Hons), Bachelor of Laws, and LLB (Hons). These are standard higher education qualifications recognised across the UK and Europe.

Usually you will enrol on either a BA or a BA (Hons). The 'Hons' represents 360+ credits of study typically over three years full time and often contains a substantial project or dissertation during the final year of study .The standard BA is usually known as an 'Ordinary' BA and is equivalent to 300 credits usually omitting the project or dissertation in the final year.

You can 'top up' a HNC, HND or Foundation Degree to an Honours Degree through a period of additional study. This is usually the equivalent of one year full time for HNDs and Foundation degrees or two years full time for a HNC.

Scotland
In Scotland, all undergraduate degrees with Honours must be of four-year duration. Students can choose to do the Honours degree or the general (or pass/ordinary) degree. The first two years of both types of degrees are the same; however, after that, students who pursue the Honours route will complete more advanced subjects and a dissertation in their last year, while students who choose to do the general degree will complete their third year at a lower level of specialisation.
Entry into the Honours year in Scotland is generally not restricted and students are encouraged to take the Honours year as the general/ordinary/pass degree does not provide the same level of depth and specialisation.
Students enrolling in the Honours program but failing to achieve the required academic merit for Honours are awarded a pass/ordinary/general degree.

There are multiple websites that explain that a Bachelor Degree can vary from 3 to 5 years in length. Furthermore, there is lots of information available about the fact that if you only get a 'pass' in your subjects overall, you may graduate with a Bachelor Degree, but you may not qualify for Honours. This was the case with my own degree, which awarded Honours to only about 50% of the students, the rest graduated with just a Bachelor.

Please see the second reference below, it is a page by EducationUK in Russian, which has excellent explanations.

non-honour or ordinary degree

The British undergraduate degree classification system is a grading structure for undergraduate degrees (bachelor's degrees and integrated master's degrees) in the United Kingdom.

Whereas grade point averages (GPAs) are different from the British undergraduate degree classes,[1] the Latin honours system used in the United States is different from the British system, but has some similarities.[2]

There are also variations between universities, especially in Scotland, where honours are usually reserved only for courses that last four years or more, with a three-year course leading to the awarding of an ordinary degree (see Master of Arts (Scotland)).
