English term

local police

English to French Other Law (general) Criminal Record
Not a complicated term but not sure about the rendering
Still in the context of a 'casier judiciaire' UK, where reference is made to 'local police system (ie police national computer) thanks for your help

hirselina Jul 4, 2016:
nicole GELISTER (asker) Jul 3, 2016:
Hi TOny, so what do you think about the renderings of both use of police here ? force de police locale/service de police locale ?
Tony M Jul 3, 2016:
@ Asker Thanks! Now that clears up the ambiguity by the mention of the PNC.
nicole GELISTER (asker) Jul 3, 2016:
Hi Tony, here is more context 'if you have requested information which may be held ona local police system, that will be returned to you under separate cover by the appropriate police force. ACRO does not have access to information held on local police systems'. (here two uses of 'police' ) thks in advance.
Tony M Jul 3, 2016:
@ Asker And we also need quite a bit more context here, please!
Normally, 'local' would be used to oppose 'national', so we really need to see the original source text in full please (minus the detailed, bits, of course!) — in particular, is the 'i.e.' yours or in the original? And when they say 'local', are they in fact referring to something on a country-scale, i.e. 'domestic' as opposed to 'foreign', for example?
AllegroTrans Jul 3, 2016:
Wrongly parsed this is not simply "local police"
but "local police systems"

Note I have used "autorités" deliberately, as in the UK there is no single police authority - there are 45 territorial/regional police authorities and 3 special police authorities
Note from asker:
Hi TOny, I think you sum it up very well here. THat is what I understand as well. So how to translate ''local police system' (with reference to request for information held on a local police system') and 'police force'. merci pour ta reponse d'avance Nicole
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I rather feel this suggests 'police systems that are local', whereas I suspect it is really 'systems belonging to the local police'. Yes, but I think ACRO DOES have access to the PNC, but NOT individual forces' local systems
1 hr
the PNC is "locally" situated but "belongs" to all forces
neutral Daryo : it's the police that is "local" // nothing is said about their IT systems and in fact each "local" police force has its own IT system procurement

Local se traduit par national.
Note from asker:

disagree Daryo : context?

disagree AllegroTrans : there is no national police force in the UK; HOW does "local" become "national"???

English term (edited): local police system

local police system = [IT] system belonging to/operated by a local police force

here "local" is what is "local" from the viewpoint of the whole of United Kingdom, not what is "local" from the viewpoint of some international organisation (a whole country) or what is "local" from the viewpoint of say a town (a neighbourhood)

see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_police_forces_of_the_U...

"local police system" as opposed to ACRO (Criminal Records Office) being an agency/office covering the whole of UK

"ACRO Criminal Records Office manages criminal record information and improves the exchange of criminal records and biometric information.

On our website you'll find details of our work to help police forces and other law enforcement agencies throughout the UK."

Peer comment(s):

neutral Daryo : to give you an idea the WHOLE of London is a "local" police force as is the WHOLE of Scotland! hardly "le commissariat du quartier" ...
