German term

Strichzelle

German to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Academic paper on Italian Art History
This is from an academic paper on the Italian art historian Vasari's method of collecting drawings and unifying them. The context for this term is:

Mit der gleichen Logik and Konsequenz, die wir andernorts sowohl für den graphischen Aufbau, die Strichzelle, als auch für die große kompositionelle Formgebung der Florentiner Zeichnung hervorhoben, trat Vasari bei der Ordnung seiner Sammlung ständig neu in die Auseinandersetzung mit dem einmal festgelegten Format der Blätter des "Libro" ein.

Can't find out what a Strichzelle is, so if anyone can help, I would be grateful.

Discussion

Laura Massey (asker) Apr 22, 2016:
Hello, I think this rendition of Strichzelle sounds about right actually.

There is lots about Vasari's dogged commitment to his projects in general in the article, though nowhere else about the Strichzelle. Can't ask the authors in this case.

Many thanks

is "andernorts" accessible? Searching Vasari. Meanwhile... Evidently the author and "we" have seen Vasari being consistent/dogged in his approach to the Strichzelle (in Florentine drawing) amongst other things "elsewhere": with any luck, in the text you're translating? Can you ask the author?
Also (I expect you've been there... ) try 'fuzzy' searches within Vasari? - 10 vols online, Eng., at http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/25326. Though the Strichzelle (or Ital. equiv.) isn't necessarily Vasari's term - cd be your author's.

just an educated guess given that the Strichzelle is set off in commas, it refers to the graphic structure just preceding it. I would venture that this is the essential line drawing (or outline) that starts off any painting or graphic work Zelle in this context would appear to signify core or essential

(regional style of) drawing structure/graphic composition

Vasari observed that a particular style of drawing was taught within different art academies, i.e. different regions of Italy. He collected and grouped those styles into "Strichzellen", "Strichbilder" or "Strichgruppen".

Lines, Zellen, cells, frames, zones... Vasari, Alberti, Gutenberg

This may be a red herring (Vasari on Alberti; maths of perspective and Arabian science to Italy... ):
