In reading the very useful explanation found on quara.com, I wonder to what extend the term 'confounding variable' might be used (or perhaps even confused like "mediation") "in this context of statistics and regression" where the effect of a certain variable must be accounted for, as it is beleived "to greatly reduce or eliminate the relationship" under examination.
I may be wrong, but it appears to me this notion may also be expressed in more non-technical English by way of phrases such as, "taking into consideration" or "accounting for," hence my equivalent suggestions in Spanish.
Y claro, lo más probable es que haya otra manera de expresarlo en español (del lenguaje especializado de la estadística), pero quizás una de éstas le sirva también.

It's not quite the dictionary meaning of mediated.
A mediating variable is one that accounts for or alters another relationship. A strict definition is that the mediating variable has to greatly reduce or even eliminate the relationship. A more lenient definition is that it affects the relationship. I favor that more lenient definition.
Mediation is often confused with moderation. In mediation adding another variable changes the relationship. In moderation adding an interaction changes the relationship. An interaction means that the relationship between one independent variable (IV) and the dependent variable (DV) is different at different levels of the other IV
Examples may clarify:
Mediation example 1: There is a strong positive relationship between the amount of firemen sent to a and the amount of damage done by the fire. Does this mean we should not send firemen to a fire?
