I'm glad I read this before posting! I was just about to give you an answer in English.
Long and short don't refer to the term of the investment or how long you hold the stock. Short means borrowing high-valued stock and selling it, then buying it later, hopefully at a lower price, and giving it back. Long is simply buying stock and then later selling it, even if you hold it for a very short time. So short selling is a bet that the price of the stock is going to fall and long selling is a bet that the price is going to rise. Investors commonly use a balance of the two.

"Defensive long holdings" means stocks held for the long term rather than to make quick gains. "Lagged markedly" means "significantly underperformed".

in questo caso si parla di posizioni lunghe detenute sui titoli difensivi in contrapposizione alle posizioni corte (short) che erano detenute sulle mid cap.
E' probabile che nel testo in precedenza si faccia riferimento a qualche benchmark ed è a questo che dovrebbe fare riferimento il verbo "lag" che tradurrei con sottoperformance.
