@Nancy Perhaps Canadian estate agents are more literate than British ones. Yes, well spotted: for some technical reason I can't edit that comma out. :(
NancyLynn Dec 29, 2015:
Sweeping generalization I don't understand how one can state that real estate agents have a poor standard of English (no comma) (no one is perfect). In any case, that might be the very argument for going to the native writers of this particular type of text. Happy Holidays everyone!
B D Finch Dec 28, 2015:
Check your source text context As it seems that "double-height windows" can be understood in various ways, you need to check what is meant in your source text. That may mean checking with the client. I don't think that Mike's idea of asking estate agents is a very good way of getting an authoritative answer, given that their generally poor, standard of English has given rise to the term "estate-agentese".
Charles Davis Dec 25, 2015:
Double-height windows Although this expression is sometimes applied to windows in a double-height room, this is not usually the case and you can't conclude that these windows are in a double-height room. See the third picture here, for example, with the caption "The main living area has double-height windows that open the house to lake and sky". It's a single-storey room of normal height, but the windows are exceptionally high (floor to ceiling as in your text):

double-height

The windows are twice as high as the windows of other storeys in the building.

agree Charles Davis : I'm not sure whether it necessarily means that they are twice as high; I think it just means that they are exceptionally high.

double-height ceiling (more than 30 feet)

Double-height points to the size of floor to ceiling gap. "The double-height ceilings in the living room are more than 30 feet high, while most other rooms have ceiling heights of about 16 feet."
And, double-height floor-to-ceiling windows points to a window whose size is equal to gap between floor and ceiling in a double-height ceiling room.

neutral Charles Davis : "Double-height" refers to the height of the windows, not the ceiling. You can't conclude anything from this about the height of the ceiling. // In effect it's saying the same thing twice. This is quite commonly done.

When "floor to ceiling" already explains the size of window then what is the need to use additional "double-height"? Please educate me.
neutral Tina Vonhof (X) : double the height of an average window.

neutral AllegroTrans : simply double the height of an average window: nothing more
