English term
The whole sentence
English to Chinese
Bus/Financial
Finance (general)
we must have positive jaws because if we’re backing off the cost efficiency target from 48% to 52% and we’re saying it’s mid 50%s, if we’re delivering positive jaws, we’re saying the cost efficiency ratio is trending down. That’s the output of positive jaws, i.e. your revenues are growing faster than your costs are growing.
I understand what positive jaws mean, but I can't figure out the whole sentence. Why is the cost efficiency ratio trending down, when it's raised from 48% to 52%. Thanks!

看解释
if we’re backing off the cost efficiency target from 48% to 52% and we’re saying it’s mid 50%s, if we’re delivering positive jaws, we’re saying the cost efficiency ratio is trending down.
原句写得不规范,实际应是:
if we’re backing off the cost efficiency target from 48% to 52%, we’re saying it’s mid 50%s; if we’re delivering positive jaws, we’re saying the cost efficiency ratio is trending down.
又有:
cost efficientcy ratio = expenses / revenue;
jaws ratio = income growth rate - expense growth rate;

The answer is in the last sentence
Hi Hanjing, I think the cost efficiency ratio depends on two factors: the cost efficiency and the revenue (cost efficiency ÷ revenue). As the last sentence explains, if the revenue grows faster than the cost efficiency, the ratios would decrease.
Wikipedia: The efficiency ratio, a ratio that typically applies to banks, in simple terms is defined as expenses as a percentage of revenue (expenses / revenue), with a few variations. A lower percentage is better since that means expenses are low and earnings are high. It relates to operating leverage, which measures the ratio between fixed costs and variable costs.
