@ Andy Risk may refer to side effects of the medication, whereas worsening is an entirely different thing related to the original condition of the patient that could ultimately mean readmission.

'escalation' is the process by which someone who arrives at the hospital is 'referred' by 'front-line' medics or nurses for examination by a specialist. It is (often) the 2nd step in a process, coming after initial examination, and prior to 're-admission', in which a patient who has recently undergone surgery is progressively referred 'up' the system.

Although "escalated" is used in medical circles, it is more-often encountered in the context of call-centres for ulitity services (phone, electric power, etc.), where the call centre staff 'escalate' (pass on to their superiors) information from consumers about 'real' problems, and put the rest on eternal 'hold':

Disculpá, ¿tendrás algo más de contexto? Como saber de qué se trata el tema. Porque pareciera ser que la droga trata de reducir el riesgo de complicaciones, que haya un menor increment de pacientes (con esa patología) o de readmitidos.

Sería de mucha ayuda tener un poco más de texto en cada consulta.

Me gustaría poder leer un trozo más largo del texto de origen para saber si el mejor término para "escalated" es "recidivar" o "exacerbarse". Ambos términos están orientados a la comunidad médica y su registro es alto. Sin embargo, su uso depende del contexto ya que recidivar, significa que los síntomas vuelven a presentarse, mientras que en la exacerbación, su intensidad se incrementa.
